Last Updated September 11, 2024
Policy Overview:
At ALTIA CENTRAL, the safety and well-being of students is our top priority. As part of our commitment to maintaining a secure and trusted environment in public schools throughout Japan, all applicants seeking to join our team as Assistant Language Teachers (ALT) are required to undergo a comprehensive background check.
Requirement:
Before an offer of employment can be extended, applicants must provide a recent background check from their home country. This background check is mandatory for all overseas recruits and must be obtained at the applicant’s own expense. The background check should demonstrate a clear history, free of any criminal records or incidents that may pose a risk to the safety of students and colleagues.
Process:
- Initiating the Background Check:
- Upon approval of your overseas application, you will be informed of the need to obtain a background check.
- It is your responsibility to contact the appropriate authorities or agencies in your home country to request a background check.
- The background check should cover all relevant criminal and legal records and should be as comprehensive as possible.
- Submission:
- Once obtained, the background check must be submitted to ALTIA CENTRAL as part of your required documentation.
- An official notarized or authenticated by the issuing authority copy is acceptable, but ultimately we only require a scan of the official copy.
- In order for your background check to be valid, we require at least 1 of the
following statements be true:

AND/OR - The background check was issued within 6 months of your expected start date (the date that we agree to put on your COE application)
- The background check was issued no earlier than 1 month before your Approval date (your Approval date is the day your Approval email was sent)
- Review and Verification:
- ALTIA CENTRAL will review the submitted background check to ensure it meets the necessary criteria.
- In some cases, it’s possible we may require additional verification or documentation. Any discrepancies or concerns will be communicated to you promptly.
- Confidentiality:
- All background check documents will be handled with the utmost confidentiality and will be used solely for the purpose of assessing your suitability for the role of an ALT in a Japanese Public School.
- These documents will be securely stored and disposed of in accordance with data protection regulations.
Important Considerations:
- Failure to provide a background check will result in your application, approval and/or placement being put on hold or denied.
- If your background check reveals any criminal history or conduct that may be deemed inappropriate for a school environment, ALTIA CENTRAL reserves the right to withdraw any employment offer or terminate the application process.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter. By ensuring that all our staff meet the highest standards of conduct, we can continue to provide a safe and effective learning environment for students across Japan.
